How to Treat Asthma and Wheezing

Posted on November 10, 2007 in Common Ailments

Asthma is a disease wherein the breathing of the patient gets obstructed. It is a chronic disease that affects the lining of the airways in the lungs (bronchioles). The lining of the airways becomes inflamed and swollen and produces extra mucus. Wheezing is a whistling noise that occurs when the bronchial tubes, which carry air to the lungs, narrow because of inflammation or mucus buildup and is often present in asthma.

During an acute asthma episode, the bronchial tubes become smaller. Initially, the person may wheeze when breathing out. As the episode becomes worse, the person may also wheeze when breathing in. During a severe asthma episode, wheezing may go away because little air is moving through the narrowed bronchial tubes.

Untreated, asthma can cause hospitalization, disability, and even death. Mild asthma can also interfere with normal daily activities such as exercise, housework, sleep, school, and work. Although asthma can be very serious, there are many ways to prevent and control symptoms.
