Sun and its light seem to be quite energetic but during summer’s sun can create life threatening problems. During summers if you spend long time out in sun then there are chances you might suffer from sunstroke/heatstroke. What do you mean by sunstroke/heatstroke? Sunstroke can be defined as a condition in which body’s heat regulating system gets disturbed.
Sunstroke/heatstroke condition is endemic in places with hot climate like India. During sunstroke/heatstroke the heat regulating system of the body fails. This failure occurs because of the prolonged exposure to high temperatures. In this condition, temperature of the body becomes very high which might even damage vital organs. When your body is unable to maintain normal body temperature it results in sunstroke/heatstroke/heat exhaustion.
What are Symptoms of Sunstroke?
Some of the most commonly observed symptoms of sunstroke are listed below:
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Sudden dizziness
- Weakness
- High fever shooting up to 40 or more degrees
- Fast pulse
- Fast breathing
- Muscular contraction and pain
- Sweating totally stops
- Skin becomes hot and dry
- Loss of consciousness

Prolonged exposure to heat and sunlight can cause sunstroke/heatstroke in anybody. But it is observed that elderly people, children and people suffering from diabetes, weak heart, skin disorders and alcoholism. Every condition has some possible causes hence some of the most prominent causes of heatstroke/sunstroke are listed below:
- Excess consumption of alcohol
- Prolonged exposure to high temperature
- Heavy workout or exercise
- Working during high fever condition
- Decreased sweating
- Dehydration
- Loss of essential minerals from body
Home Remedies for Sunstroke:
Some of the effective and simple home remedies are listed below. These home remedies provide fast relief from the various symptoms of sunstroke. But in case after following these remedies the condition is persistent then you need to rush to your physician.
- First and foremost you need to drink lot of water this is necessary to control dehydration.
- Second most important step is to relax in a cool and shaded place.
- It’s better to sponge yourself with ice-cold water.
- In case you are wearing tight fitted clothes then it is better to remove those clothes.
- It is better to drink oral dehydration solution (solution containing sufficient amount of salt and sugar). This solution is helpful in restoring the mineral content of the body.
- Onions are highly effective in sunstroke condition. It is better to rub onion juice on the palms and sole. You can even smell cut onion piece for controlling the symptoms of sunstroke.
- During sunstroke it is better to eat lots of water rich fruits and vegetables like: watermelon, cucumber, pineapple, oranges, etc.
- Buttermilk is also another effective home remedy for sunstroke. It is better to drink at least 2-3 glasses of buttermilk daily until sunstroke is completely cured.
To prevent yourself from the sunstroke it is better to carry an umbrella or wear a hat before going out in sun. Secondly prefer wearing lightweight and light colored natural fabrics like cotton. Lastly drink a lot of water, it is better to carry a water bottle with you.
