Can Food Habits Slash Down Cancer?

Few years ago the American Cancer Institute stated that about 1/3 of  all cancers are related to our food habits and another 30% results from smoking. The above statement reflects that if we have an eye on what we eat and stop smoking we can reduce the risk of getting cancer. We have a number of foods that help fight cancer. Certainly, food habits can strike a blow at cancer.

Foods That Prevent Cancer

Listed below are some foods that can help prevent cancer:

  • Broccoli:

    Broccoli belongs to the crucifer family of vegetables which includes cabbage, cauliflower and brussels sprouts which contain high levels of anti-cancerous properties.

  • Cabbage and Brussels Sprouts:

    Eating cabbage and brussels sprouts could help kill the cancerous cells.

  • Ginger:

    Gingerol is a substance in ginger root and the most active compound that gives ginger its distinctive flavour. Gingerol is rich in anti-cancer properties as well which can inhibit the cancer cells.

  • Carrot:

    Falcarinol, a component of carrot may be able to prevent cancer say some experts. Carrots contain beta-carotene, which is a precursor to preparing vitamin A. Vitamin A boosts the immune system thereby encouraging an overall good health.

  • Green Tea:

    Drinking green tea reduces the risk of esophageal cancer in men and breast cancer in women. Catechin polyphenols particularly Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) which are very rich in green tea lead the fight against cancer.

  • Grains:

    Grains are concentrated in natural antioxidants, which helps to cleanse the system of all impurities. Grains contain dependable source of phytoestrogens that may protect against some hormonal cancers. Oats, Rye, Barley are few grains that are effective in fighting cancer.

  • Tomatoes:

    Eating tomatoes or drinking tomato juice reduces the risk of cancer because their rich content of Lycopene. Lycopene is an active anticancer food to prevent Prostate cancer.

  • Blueberries:

    Anthocyanin pigments which are rich in wild blueberries can inhibit cancer cells in initiation, promotion and proliferation phases.

  • Beans and Peas:

    Beans and peas contain an anticancer compound which blocks a key enzyme involved in cancer growth.

  • Brown Rice:

    IP6 (inositol hexaphosphate), a substance rich in brown rice can inhibit the cancer growth of cells.
