Balanitis Conditions and Symptoms

Balanitis is the inflammation of the head of the penis (glans penis) due to infection or allergies. Balanitis can show up in the form of redness, itchiness or discharge at the glans penis. People who have unhygienic habits, who do not clean their penis regularly can develop balanitis. Men who are circumcised (removal of the foreskin) have a low risk of developing balantis conditions and symptoms.

Balantis symptoms and conditions also show up in people who are diabetic. In diabetic patients, the sugar from the urine is deposited at the glans penis. This can lead in infection leading to balanitis.

How is Balanitis Caused?
Balanitis is mainly caused when excess moisture is present at the glans penis. This is very conducive for the bacteria, virus, and yeast to grow and cause infection. Balanitis can also be caused due to an allergy to certain soap, lotion or lubricant.

Balanitis Remedies:
Balantis remedies include the following:

Anti-fungal or anti-bacterial creams: Your doctor can prescribe balantis remedies such as anti-fungal or anti-bacterial or anti-yeast creams to get rid of the infection.

Steroid cream and tablets: Steroid cream is used to reduce the inflammation caused due to balanitis. Your doctor can also prescribe oral medications such as antibiotics to reduce balanitis

Clean: Keeping the glans and foreskin reduces the risk of infection. Cleaning can be done sliding back the foreskin while taking bath or showering

Beware of allergies: Certain soaps or detergents can cause allergy resulting in balanitis. Hence, avoid using such products for cleaning

Check for diabetes: Men who are diabetic have a high risk of developing balanitis. Hence, it is important to get checked for diabetes if you have developed balanitis

To diagnose balanitis, your doctor may take a swab and check it for bacterial, viral, or yeast infection. If balanitis symptoms and causes do not go away, your doctor can recommend circumcision. In some conditions, balanitis can lead to phimosis (tightening of the foreskin). Hence, it is very important to clean the penis regularly.
