Detox or detoxification is the natural way of our body to neutralize or eliminate toxins. Such toxins may include ammonia (formed by the breakdown of proteins), chemicals such as drugs, food additives, pesticides, etc. These substances can enter our body through inhalation or ingestion.

Detox diet, also known as cleansing diet, includes natural foods to remove toxins from our body. There are many detox diets that can aid in the proper functioning of our entire body or specific organs like liver, kidneys, etc. Some of these diets include simple fruit and vegetable diet, juice fast, raw-food detox diet, mono-fruit detox diet, etc.
What a Detox Diet Involves?
A typical detox diet can last between 5 days to 2 weeks. It can include eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables along with drinking 3-4 litres of liquid daily.
Benefits of a Detox Diet
Though detox diet is touted as a way to flush out toxins, there is no medical proof of any such benefit. The basic premise of detox diet is based on giving up those foods that are considered â€˜toxicâ€™ to our body. Some such foods may include alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, salt, sugar, red meat, etc. There are also others who actively support detox diet. They argue that detox diet can improve diseases and symptoms such as tiredness, headaches, allergies, aches and pains.
Side Effects of a Detox Diet
Due to severe diet restriction and sudden caffeine withdrawal, people often complain of headache, tiredness, irritability, etc.
