Improper diet is the main reason people get sinus allergies. The diet needs to be corrected if the situation is to be improved.
What sinusitis patients should avoid eating
- Intake of salt should be reduced. Salt leads to accumulation of fluids in tissues, which worsens the sinus infection.
- Completely avoid fried foods, starchy foods, white sugar, white flour, rice, macaroni, pies, cakes and candies.
- Also avoid strong spices and meat. Butter should be used sparingly.
- Cook your food freshly for each meal. Avoid eating leftovers.
- Do not eat refrigerated foods.
What to eat if you have sinus allergy
- People with sinus allergies also suffer from acidity. So the diet should tilt towards alkaline foods.
- Your diet should be a balanced one consisting of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables and fruits.
- Eat a lot of vegetables. Have a lot of fruits also, but avoid citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruit, lemon etc.
- Diet rich in Vitamin A will help you fight sinusitis. Some sources are milk, yogurt, egg yolk, pumpkin, carrot, leafy vegetables, tomatoes, mango and papaya.
- Drink milk. Milk contains calcium, which helps overcome sinus infection.
- Pungent herbs like garlic and onion help decongest the nasal passages. Start by taking them raw in little amounts everyday. Increase gradually and incorporate into your food.
- Drinking a mixture of 200 ml spinach juice and 300 ml carrot juice every day will help sinus treatment.
Other measures to control sinus infection
- Avoid perfumes and other strong scents.
- Get plenty of sleep and fresh air.
- Some yoga exercises can be very helpful for sinus problems.
What to do when sinus allergy is acute
- When the sinus infection is really severe, when you have fever, do not eat any solid food. Drink fresh fruit and vegetable juices diluted in water on a 50:50 basis. After fever subsides, go for a low-calorie fruit and vegetable diet. Include plenty of raw juices.
- Taking doses of Vitamin A will help. Take a dose of 25,000 I.U per day. Vitamin C also can be helpful. Take two doses of 500 mg in a day.
- Washing your face with alternate hot and cold water will provide relief. First wash with hot water, as hot as you can bear. Then use cold water for a short duration.
- Inhale steam for 5 minutes every hour. This will give relief.
