Lemongrass Aromatherapy Oil : Properties and Benefits

Lemongrass has traditionally been used by Indians as a medicine. The herb has numerous uses and properties in aromatherapy. It is particularly used as an insect repellent. The botanical name for Lemongrass is Cymbopogon citratus and belongs to Poaceae family.

Citral

is the main component of lemongrass essential oil. It is also called Citronella.

Lemongrass essential oil is extracted from leaves of lemongrass. The oil is basically yellow coloured with sweet, citrus fragrance. It has traditionally been used by Indians for treatment of fever and other diseases. In Chinese medicines it is used for treatment of rheumatism, colds, stomach pain and headaches.

    – Lemongrass essential oil is used in treatment of acne and to get relief from oily skin.

    – The oil is used to repel insect like fleas, ticks, lice and mosquitoes etc.

  • Pain reliever

    – Essential oil of lemongrass is used as a pain reliever for muscle aches, joints pains, headaches, stress, nervous exhaustion and fever.

  • The oil is also used as a treatment for laryngitis and sore throat.
  • Its application also improves blood circulation.
  • When the oil is mixed with other carrier oils and massaged, it can treat cellulite, infections and other digestive problems.
  • The aroma of oil can be an excellent air freshener and purifies the air.

Cautions while using Lemongrass Essential Oil:

  • The oil is considered to be non-toxic, though it can cause some skin irritation in people with damaged skin or sensitive skin or in allergic people.
  • Should be kept away from young children and also people with glaucoma.
