Chelation Therapy for Atherosclerosis

Chelation therapy involves the introduction of chelating agents into the body. This is done to remove the heavy metals from the body. The use of first chelating agent as a medicine was done during first World War. Chelation is derived from the Greek word ‘chele’, meaning “claw”. Chelation therapy is effectively used in atherosclerosis as it relieves angina pain. Though, American Medical Association does not recommend the chelation therapy, but worldwide results suggests the therapy may provide some benefits.

Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (DMPS) are some of the chelating agents. These are the agents which are used in conventional and alternative medicine treatment. These are used to remove heavy metal intoxication of lead, mercury and arsenic.

Characteristics of Chelation Therapy:

  • In this therapy, an organic metal gets bonded with metals present in blood stream and removes them out of the system.
  • Chelation therapy is standard treatment for heavy metal poisoning, such as arsenic, iron, lead, uranium, plutonium and mercury.
  • It relieves pain in angina symptoms. Hence, it is being used for atherosclerosis treatment.
  • Atherosclerosis is hardening of the arteries, which can cause stroke and heart disease.

Ways to Use Chelation Therapy for Atherosclerosis:

  • Discuss with your health care provider about the benefits of therapy, whether it will bring some benefit and reduce chances of further development of the condition.
  • Begin the chelation therapy. Note the condition before and after the treatment.
  • Changing in lifestyle such as controlled and balanced eating habits, reducing cholesterol, stress, smoking and drinking etc. These changes can certainly bring about some positive changes.
