Barley is a staple food item cropped from the barley plant. In scientific terms, barley is called

Hordeum vulgare

. This is an annual grass-like plant that is cultivated throughout the world. Probably, this is an ancient food grain, that dates back to the Stone Age. According to the statistics of crop production, this is one among the top 5 cereal crops. Non-shattering and high yielding barley varieties are produced commercially for increasing the world crop production.
