Health Benefits of Lime Juice

The fresh, fragrance and citrus flavor of a lime is rejuvenating. These have originated from the Himalayan region of Asia and India. Typically, these are oval or round, about 3 – 6 cm in diameter, and green to yellow in color based on their ripeness and variety. The peel and flesh are sweet or sour, and mostly acidic. There are several health benefits of lime juice which may be obtained throughout the year and are generally sweeter than lemons.

Health Benefits of Lime Juice:

  • Digestion:

    Acids in the lime breaks down the macro molecules of the food that aids in smooth digestion. Flavonoids are another important compound present in the lime that stimulates digestive system due to its aroma, increases the secretion of digestive juices, acids and biles.

  • Weight Loss and Obesity:

    Traditionally, it is used for reducing weight. One of the benefits of lime juice is that it reduces calories. Mix a tablespoon of honey to a glass of lukewarm water and drink daily in the morning on an empty stomach for losing weight. This should be followed for 2 – 3 months.

  • Constipation:

    This juice helps in treating other digestive diseases such as constipation too. The acids which stimulate the digestive system assist in easing constipation and clearing the excretory tracts. Lime juice along with salt acts as an effective purgative which gives instant relief.

  • Scurvy:

    This is due to the vitamin C deficiency. As limes are rich in vitamin, it’s very helpful in curing the condition. This is a popular remedy since 19th century.

  • Eye Care:

    Antibacterial and antioxidant properties protect eyes from muscular degeneration and infections. Wash your eyes with a few drops of warm lemon juice which is combined with salt or plain water. It helps in clearing several infections such as conjunctivitis.

  • Common cold:

    Though disputed, an excellent dose of lime aids in clearing common cold, by aggravating the body’s resistance towards cold.

  • Gums:

    Vitamin C in lime addresses gum related problems aggravated by the deficiency of vitamin C like wounds and ulcers, bleeding, etc.

  • Peptic ulcers:

    These are open sores which develop on the inner side of the stomach, esophagus and/or upper small intestine, that causes severe pain in the abdomen. The acids present in the limes results in alkaline reaction and thus, reduces the gastric acidity.
