What Is Ear Acupuncture?

Ear acupuncture

also called

Auricular therapy

is a widely used traditional treatment to treat mood disorders, pain, obesity, addiction and certain other conditions. It is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It treats the particular person as a whole taking into consideration the entire medical system. Ear acupuncture points are located on the ear and stimulating them with the needles helps in regulating the organs, tissues, their functions and structures.

Ear acupuncture has been used since ancient times in China and is also referred to as

“The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine” in Chinese

medical books. Ear acupuncture is similar to body acupuncture and is a method of treating various psychological and physiological disorders by stimulating acupuncture points present on the ear.

How is Ear Acupuncture Used in a Treatment?

Ear acupuncture is done in parallel with the general acupuncture treatment to treat any disorders. In any acupuncture, points are used in the rest of the body to stimulate them. But, if that involves even ear acupuncture, the acupuncturist treats a few points on the ear to make the person feel better and get relief from the particular condition.

Ear Seeds and Ear Tacks

Ear seeds or ear tacks help in stimulating the ear acupuncture points for a longer period.

  • Ear seeds

are tiny seeds of the plant, Vaccaria that are placed on the ear and held with a small adhesive tape piece. They are kept back in the ear for 1 to 2 weeks after the treatment.

  • Ear tacks

are tiny needles with sticky back. They can be easily inserted into the ear and kept for a few days to one week.
