Does Acupuncture Work

There are many theories that attempt to give an explanation on how

does acupuncture work

and whether it really works. There are mainly two theories namely, eastern and western explanations of acupuncture. These explanations of acupuncture are given based on the use of acupuncture in diseases associated with pain.

Eastern Explanation

This explains acupuncture based on

chi (Qi) which is the energy flow in the body

. The overall energy flow in the body can be balanced by stimulating the points called acupuncture points. These acupuncture points are located at the regions where all the organs are connected with each other through energy channels called meridians. Any disease or illness arises only when this flow of energy through meridians is blocked or imbalanced. This imbalance can be treated through inserting needles in the acupuncture points and stimulating the energy flow.

Western Explanation

According to western explanation, acupuncture is the technique of stimulating certain points present on the skin surface that have the ability to alter

physiological and biochemical effects to achieve a good health condition.

Does Acupuncture Work? – Explanation

Acupuncture points are sensitive to electrical impulses. When the needles are inserted in these points, the sensory receptors get stimulated which in turn stimulates nerves which then transmit signals to the base of the brain, called hypothalamic-pituitary system.

The glands of hypothalamic-pituitary system release the endorphins and neurotransmitters which are the body’s natural defenders. Endorphins play an important role in hormonal functioning. This is the reason acupuncture works good for arthritis, back pain, infertility and premenstrual syndrome.

The components stimulated through acupuncture treatment relax the whole body system and regulate the neurotransmitter serotonin that plays a key part in human disposition. This is the reason depression is mostly treated by acupuncture.

The physiological effects observed as a result of acupuncture include decreased inflammation, increased circulation, relief from muscle spasms, pain and raise in T-cell count.
