Arthritis and Acupuncture – An Overview

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese treatment method that has got many health benefits. Some take it as a way to treat the pain and some to treat arthritis condition itself. Research studies show that acupuncture very effectively treats the pain of osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis disease).

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the method of inserting tiny and thin needles into specific acupuncture points to stimulate them and improve the overall energy of the body. It is a very ancient treatment method originated in China about 2000 years ago. It is estimated that about 2 million people use the treatment in the United States every year.

The acupuncture technique involves the penetration into the skin at specific points using of thin and sharp needles that are controlled by hands or electric impulses. Recently, a lot of advancement has been made in acupuncture, its mechanisms and possible benefits particularly in treating conditions like arthritis.

Research Studies on Arthritis and Acupuncture

A research study issued in the journal of the

Annal of Internal Medicine on December 21, 2004

stated that

acupuncture

helps relieve arthritis pain and improves the knee functioning in patients affected with

knee osteoarthritis

. The study is as follows –

  • Patients with knee pain were first assessed with standard measurement tools and survey instruments.
  • After being treated with acupuncture, the progress in them was continuously assessed at 4th, 8th, 14th and 26th weeks.
  • By 8th week, a significant improvement in knee functioning was observed in patients.
  • By 14th week, a relative decrease in pain was noticed, even the results were compared with the standard control groups.
  • The results of 26th week showed even more improvement.
  • Compared to baseline assessments, the patients who had acupuncture treatment nearly showed a 40% improvement in knee functioning and 40% decrease in knee pain.

Even for

rheumatoid arthritis

, a few research studies were conducted to find out whether acupuncture works with other arthritis types or not. The publishers showed that these studies included a very few patients, design problems, the number of acupuncture treatments and the time periods and the variations in acupuncture points. But, this requires a better research and therefore a correct finding is not yet published.

Is Acupuncture Good For Arthritis?

Acupuncture can serve as a beneficial addition to the standard arthritis treatment. But, it should not be used along with other recommended treatments. Acupuncture is only effective for knee osteoarthritis but it may not be that effective for other arthritis types or other osteoarthritis types.

Make sure you discuss with your physician about arthritis and acupuncture treatment before going for it. It is also very important to get the acupuncture treatment done by a certified acupuncturist. The reason is it may lead to certain complications if not done by an experienced and certified acupuncturist.

What happens during acupuncture treatment for arthritis?

The acupuncturist cleans each acupuncture point with alcohol. Now, a thin metal needle is inserted into the site. The number of needles used and the depth of penetration may vary. In the determined points, they are placed very carefully.

After insertion, they are kept as such for several minutes to one hour. The needles are spun around, electrically energized or warmed to increase the effect of the acupuncture. A tingling sensation may happen when the needles are electrically stimulated. But, if the sensation becomes severe, ask the acupuncturist to lower the electricity.

Different needling techniques may be used, different combinations of acupuncture points may be used and even both may be done. They help in quick recovery from pains and also improve the knee functioning.
