Diet

It is very good to take excess fluids and minimize foods like red meat, heavy starches, refined sugar and hard cheeses. Begin your day with a glass of lemon juice. Drink more and more amounts of apple, carrot, pineapple and papaya juices, herbal teas and water throughout the day as they help in easing the sore throat pain and expelling mucus and head or facial aches. Herbal teas

Consuming a cup of herbal tea helps in providing relief, soothing and warming effect to the throat and head. Herbs that help and are very safe to use include ginger, anise, nettles, red clover and fenugreek.

To prepare a cup of tea, take two teaspoons of any of these herbs and add to one cup of boiling water. Steep for about 10 minutes and if desired, you can add a teaspoon of honey. Consume this during daytime to relieve congestion and loosen phlegm.

Steam helps in loosening mucus and expelling it from the nasal cavities. Take about 2 quarts of boiled water in a large glass bowl and add any of these following ingredients:

  • 3 teaspoons of dried chamomile
  • 3 teaspoons of dried eucalyptus leaves
  • 4 drops of eucalyptus or pine essential oil

Bend your head over the large glass bowl and cover yourself with a towel. Inhale the steam for 10 – 15 minutes.

You can even take a hot shower. Keep the bathroom door and shower curtain closed so that the steam is held withing the bathroom. You can even add 8 drops of eucalyptus or peppermint essential oil to a cup of water and add this mixture to the bath water tub. Soak yourselves in water tub for 20 minutes. Take rest after having a hot shower.

Acupressure

This is another natural way for sinus congestion relief. Massage underneath the big toe for one minute and then rub underneath all the toes for one minute. Use your thumb and index finger to gently press the top of the nose for 5 seconds and repeat this 3 times. There is another acupressure point at the back of the head where there is hollow area under the base of the skull. Using your middle finger, press the area for one minute.
